XSI / OGRE Training, threading, gaming

You might have seen this on the OGRE forums, but Digital-Tutors has released a new DVD which covers using XSI to create game characters, using OGRE as the target engine. I’ve never actually used one of their DVDs before, but they had a pretty big presence at Siggraph when I was there, and were running a whole load of XSI tutorials over at the Softimage booth, which I whilst I was there, not realising at the time that these guys were using OGRE. I’m due to get a free copy of the DVD so I’m looking forward to viewing it, I could always do with some extra XSI training, since I still suck at using it.

I’ve been working on a few things over the past week (besides having the lounge floor done), including finally adding mip biasing to texture units, checking and applying a bunch of patches, reviewing Google Summer of Code work (since that finished early this week), and starting work on threading again. I’ve decided on a compromise between the various approaches, meaning that complete resource loading will be done in a background thread, but there will be an assumption that there is only one of these threads, and that other actions will not be thread safe - a decent middle ground between performance and function I think.

Finally, since I’ve had the opportunity to do OGRE work during the day since I’ve been on holiday (for the purposes of the floor work), I’ve been spending some evenings playing more games. I’ve spent so long rationing myself in the interests of getting work done that it’s been quite a change for me - I actually spent a couple of hours each of the last 3 evenings in a row playing, which is a completely unheard of indulgence these days. A bit of Doom3 (not much though, gets very repetitive and it’s still way too bloody dark), quite a bit of Knights of the Old Republic (which is a damn good game, but absolutely huge), and now a bit of reminiscing in Neverwinter Nights. I used to play the original a lot (as well as other games) in multiplayer with my wife, before OGRE completely took over all my spare time, and I’d forgotten how much we both missed that. It’s a lot of fun and we’re planning on playing one of the expansions a bit more, one which she’d played on her own a bit after I’d dropped out but didn’t get very far in. It’ll have to get cut back again next week when I’m back at work, but I’m going to enjoy it while I can. 😀I really have to not let the big burly OGRE take over all the time, some more leisure time is definitely required.
