I love xkcd

Personal 10 Comments

If you don’t read xkcd already, I urge you to do so regularly, it’s really quite funny. There are lots of webcomics around obviously, but I have 3 main favorites, all for subtley different reasons: User Friendly, because it’s always taking witty pops at the big corporations and cuts across pretty much every element of IT, Penny Arcade for its game focus and unapologeticly visceral humour, and xkcd because of its, well, quaintness and subtlety. There’s something about being able to use simple stick figures to get a belly laugh that I admire a great deal.

Today’s is amusing as usual, but my other recent favorites are Cat Proximity , Small Talk , The Perfect Sound and Regular Expressions. Pure class.

Heh, I started reading it a while ago, possibly linked from here, but the Regex one is great, I was actually starting learn regexes the day I read it and the exact same thoughs crossed my mind :P

I liked the one about being kicked out of the ACM for telling them that e^pi-pi = 20 unless you have a bug in your rounding code :) I like the Dinosaur Comics for weirdness and Ctrl-Alt-Del for more game humour too.

xkcd has it’s moments and Penny Arcade can be a real hoot but UserFriendly is consistently the most unfunny comic strip ever.

Just shows humour is a very personal thing – I’ve read UF for years and find it consistently amusing. Something like PA I find a bit more erratic, ie sometimes it’s absolutely bloody superb, other times really rubbish (like some of those multi-comic ‘dramatic’ strips they do – which are generally just dull), whilst UF tends tick along being consistently fairly funny.

No love for VG Cats?!? It’s the South Park to Penny-Arcade’s Family Guy; filthy humor at it’s best.

The recent one on Wario Ware Smooth Moves is fantastic:

@eric: yeah, I like VGCats too but didn’t quite make it into my top 3 because of the weekly update (and sometimes they miss that) and occasional lulls. But when it’s good, it’s good :) I like this recent one: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=224

I never read these comic strips. I used to visit them when a particular day’s comic was recommended and then wondered why. Maybe I just don’t get the humour or maybe I just don’t care. I don’t know. Either way, I’m usually left thinking I wasted my time.
