>If you’re anything like me you’ve had difficulty explaining to your wife / significant other that in our kind of world, there’s really no discrete black-and-white transition between ‘work’ and ‘not work’ that starts at 9am and ends at 5pm every day like clockwork.

Most definately. A matter of fact this started for me when I first got a C64 in my early teens. Time and sleep melted away really. My parents freted, my grades slipped a bit, but it all paid off in the end with a solid career. My wife calls herself a computer widow, but I think she understands my quirky passion better than anyone else dear to me. Thanks goodness. :)

I would go futher and say it's more about being able to *finish" something - and you've managed to finish many versions of your pet project. Props :-)

Congrats Steve :D I know what you mean about being a "project oriented person". Wish you keep that very same spirit for a very long time. It's great to have an inspiring figure nearby to get that little pushing needed to start walking :)

I've probably mentioned before that OGRE started out as a refactoring of a DirectX 5 engine I had written called DIMClasses (Direct3D Immediate Mode Classes). I found that I had hidden the nastyness of DirectX so well that it didn't need to have anything to do with DirectX anymore, so I refactored to an extra level to make the render system pluggable and OGRE was born. I simply looked for an acronym that was not technology specific, included the words 'Object oriented' and 'Graphics' somewhere, and was hopefully catchy. That was OGRE, I think I came up with it in late 1999 or early 2000 (I registered the project on Sourceforge in Feb 2000).

Offtopic:
When did you get the idea for the name OGRE?
Before starting to develop the engine, or during the development?
