I get the feeling a new internet phenomenon has just started, that is the use of the term ‘Boosh!’ to parody totally inappropriate levels of self-confidence and machismo. View this video to see why. Comical meme-forming quotes aside, I feel sorry for Free Radical. It’s clear the development of Haze had some problems, and they’re being utterly crucified for it around the Internet now - some of that isn’t their fault, some of it is just because they were a console exclusive so every fanboy from the opposite camp takes pleasure in using it to bolster their arguments.
Following on from my previous post, it’s now clear the name is Guitar Hero World Tour - avoiding the word ‘Rock’ but keeping the slightly misleading Guitar lead, and patching on the name for a play mode in Rock Band. There’s a trailer up, the only thing about it that interests me is that it features Lenny Kravitz’s ‘Are You Gonna Go My Way’, which has always been on all of my major wish-lists for Guitar Hero.
My wife and I were discussing last night what we thought Activision might call the increasingly inaccurately named ‘Guitar Hero IV’, given that it’s really not just about guitars anymore; ‘Rock Hero’ maybe? Rock Clone? Clone Band? Or perhaps they’ll just keep the GH4 name just in the interests of branding, and give it a lame subtitle to explain the inconsistency, probably slipping the word ‘Rock’ in there discretely somewhere. You probably saw the announcement recently of the drum kit, which has all the hallmarks of being required to ‘take it to the next level’ by replacing one drumpad with two dedicated cymbal pads.
It seems I can’t go near any gaming websites these days without feeling like I’m wading into a full-on firefight. Fanboyism is unfortunately something of a recurring problem in the gaming consumer population, seemingly driven by those who for whatever reason are either willing or able to buy only one console, and once they’ve done that, feel they have to shore up their own purchase by pissing over everyone elses. They’re egged on by corporate marketing departments of course, who are somewhat economical with the truth most of the time, but at least they have an excuse - talking trash earns their company money.
This is a week old now but I only just spotted it - Activision have taken the unusual step of releasing an official Guitar Hero Flash game , which is embedded below. It doesn’t play particularly well (but then neither did Guitar Hero 3 - zing!) but I guess when you consider the limitations of the medium what’s there is an achievement, and even so it’s fun that they did it.
The blog has suffered a little since I’ve had a very hectic week, with multiple clients to keep happy, a couple of social events and since most of last weekend was taken up with organising Ogre SVN conversion and various chores I seem to have had very little downtime - my only gaming all week was a couple of hours on Crackdown. My energy seemed to finally run out last night when I found myself dragging my half-comatose body to bed by 11pm - completely unheard of in our house.
See, this is kind of the thing that makes me happy (ish) to get up in the morning - a group of 4 students at the National University of Singapore have developed an interesting experimental game using Ogre and other tools, called ‘Rainbow Road’. What makes it interesting is that it’s a Wiimote-controlled shoot-em up which generates enemies based on a music track that you’re listening to. Their development video is pretty interesting, it shows the various stages they went through to get there.
I’d seen a few shots & reviews of Ikaruga before, right back to when I owned an ill-fated Dreamcast, but I never really thought it was for me. A hard-core, vertically scrolling shoot-em-up - surely I’d outgrown those when I stopped regularly feeding 10ps into my local arcade machines? Surely there’s very little I hadn’t seen from this kind of game over the years - I understood about the white/black switching thing but I figured it was just a gimmick.
I couldn’t let this pass without commenting on it. The Gears of War action figures that have been talked about for a while now have finally been revealed in box form, one of them is shown on the right-hand side there (click for a larger version). Now, men have always been reluctant to grow up, and gamers are probably the least willing of all camps. But surely this takes the cake - action figures specifically designed for a product that is targetted at 18+ year olds.
